Research

Jean-Luc Probst has a good expertise on hydrology and biogeochemistry of the Critical Zone, from small catchments to large river basins and he already worked on river systems all around the world with scientists of different countries: Congo and Ubangui, Niger and its tributaries, Nyong in South Cameroun, Senegal, Milo in Guinea, Haho and Zio in Togo, Oued Sebou in Morocco, Nahr Ibrahim in Lebanon, Amazon and its tributaries, Parana and Uruguay, Patagonian rivers, Indian rivers, Chinese rivers, Black River and Grand River North West in Mauritius, Piracicaba and Tiete in Brazil, Garonne, Mosel, Rhone, Tet and Ill rivers in France.

Main  research  interests:

  • Hydrology and Biogeochemistry of the Critical Zone : to estimate the physical and chemical erosion rates of the river basins and to determine the soil weathering type using the fluvial transports of particulate and dissolved elements.
  • Biogeochemistry of the carbon cycle : to quantify and to modelize the role of rock/soil chemical weathering and of riverine alkalinity transports into the oceans to the global carbon cycle, particularly to the atmospheric CO2 content.
  • Heavy metal transfer dynamic in soils and river systems : to estimate the respective contribution of rock/soil chemical weathering and of anthrogenic activities to heavy metal contents and dynamic  in soils and  rivers  (water and sediments) and to determine the role of the different controlling factors: organic carbon, iron oxides, clays, pH, redox potential, inorganic ligands, chemical and physical speciations.
  • Pesticide and nutrient transfer dynamic in catchments: to determine the role of the storm runoff events in the transfer of pesticides from the soils to the river systems (water and sediments) and to assess the contribution of the different runoffs (surface runoff, subsurface and groundwater flows) to the exportation of pesticides by the river.
